In a market fully saturated by first person shooters, all of which are fairly similar, it's hard to find a game that stands out among that crowd. Crysis 2 is no exception, but that doesn't make it bad; in fact, it makes it even better then it's predecessor in many ways.
While going into Crysis 2 i was fully skeptical if it would run on my older pc (pentium d 2.8ghz, hd4670) i was actually pleasantly surprised to find that the game runs at more then playable rates on the lowest setting. Although some of you may be gagging at the sound of playing any PC game on low, Crysis 2 manages to look brilliant regardless of the setting you choose to play on.
While you might expect shadows to not be rendered, and perhaps a limited amount of bloom and physics, all of these things are actually still present in the lowest setting. In fact, the only real differences between the lowest and highest settings of Crysis 2 on pc are Anti-Aliasing, some bloom effects, and a difference in draw distance. There are a few other minor differences, but nothing you're going to notice. The game still managed to make my jaw drop to the floor several times throughout the campaign.
While graphics were bound to be good(this is a crytek game, afterall) Crysis 2 actually manages to shine in a few other aspects of it's design. First, the gameplay has been simplified to the point that the game is just easier to pick up and play. Although the game is still a sandbox at heart, you're pushed along a linear path for the most part. That may sound bad to some of you who enjoyed the original game, but it really helps push the story forward and make you feel like you're a part of this absurd world.
The story is something i don't want to talk about much here..but i can tell you that the story is something that, while not perfect, is far better then any story i have ever experienced from any crytek game in the past. The game seems super focused on conspiracy, and manages to pull out a nice action blockbuster feel with some well developed characters and the like.
Overall, Crysis 2 is a beautiful game that has very few flaws. Sure, you may find a glitch here and there, but for every glitch you find you'll see something far better to make you forget that glitch only seconds later. The game kept me hooked, and i look forward to playing it again in the future when time allows me.
Looks great, might pick it up some time!
